Abstract
This articles records the NĀRĀYANĪ STUTI as found in the Chapter 11 of Durga Saptashati.
NĀRĀYANĪ STUTI in Durga Saptashati The chapter 11 of the NĀRĀYANĪ STUTI is the culmination of the Devi Mahatmya, where the gods offer praises to the Devi, especially in her form as Nārāyaṇī, after she has vanquished the demon Raktabīja. The mantra ”Nārāyaṇī namo’stu te” (Salutations to you, O Narayani!) is chanted after each verse of praise and is symbolic of the invocation of the sixteen-fold aspects of Devi as Nārāyaṇī. Sixteenfold Power of Nārāyaṇī – Reflecting the 16 Kalās The ”ṣoḍaśa kalāḥ” (षोडश कलाः) or sixteen attributes/energies are traditionally associated with the full moon and the Pūrṇa Śakti (complete power). In the context of the Nārāyaṇī Śakti, these sixteen kalās are metaphysical aspects of the Devi’s completeness, and are often linked to:
1. Creation (Sṛṣṭi)
2. Preservation (Sthiti)
3. Destruction (Samhāra)
4. Tirobhāva (Concealment or Maya)
5. Anugraha (Grace or Revelation)
6. Jñāna (Knowledge)
7. Icchā (Will)
8. Kriyā (Action)
9. Śānti (Peace)
10. Lakṣmī (Prosperity)
11. Dhṛti (Fortitude)
12. Śraddhā (Faith)
13. Medhā (Intelligence)
14. Smṛti (Memory)
15. Daya (Compassion)
16. Mukti (Liberation)
These sixteen kalās can also be reflected in the 16 verses of the Nārāyaṇī Stuti, which invoke different powers or qualities of the Devi in Nārāyaṇī form, revealing how she functions as the cosmic, all-encompassing Śakti behind all deities and cosmic operations.
Philosophical Significance
“Nārāyaṇī” here does not merely mean the female counterpart of Narayana (Viṣṇu), but the primordial Shakti from whom even Nārāyaṇa derives his power. She is the Adyā Śakti, the original source of all divine powers, from Viṣṇu, Śiva, Brahmā, and others. This concept is in line with Shākta Tantric and Kashmir
Shaiva perspectives where Śakti is the absolute (not merely a consort).
Devotional and Liturgical Use
The 16 Kalā Stuti of Nārāyaṇī has been adopted in various yantra pūjās, śoḍaśopacāra pūjā, and in the Navarātri rituals, especially when invoking the completeness of Devi as the cosmic mother.
